21 Cozy Movies That Feel Like Fall (Even If You Hate Horror)
Craving an autumn movie night without the jump scares? Grab your favorite blanket and a warm drink. From rainy-day whodunits to sweater-weather city strolls, here are 21 cozy fall movies paired with the perfect "Nookish" hobbies to maximize your seasonal serotonin.
THE WATCH NOOK

There’s a very specific struggle I have every October. The air gets crisp, I pull out my favorite sweater, make a warm cup of something cozy, and sit down to find a movie, only to discover that every streaming service has been taken over by slashers, psychological thrillers, and jump scares.
I love the aesthetic of spooky season but I don’t want to spend movie night hiding behind a pillow or wondering whether I’ll be able to sleep afterward. Give me sweaters, crunchy leaves, gloomy skies, old houses, and maybe a friendly ghost or two. I don't want the nightmare fuel.
Which is exactly why I made this list. I’ve rounded up 21 movies I’ve actually watched and would recommend, from rainy-day mysteries and nostalgic Halloween favorites to romantic city strolls and magical adventures. Some feature witches, vampires, ghosts, or dramatic mansions, but they’re much closer to charming, funny, and magical than frightening.
I’ve sorted everything by mood, with a few special Nookish Pairings tucked in along the way. So pick whatever kind of fall night you’re in the mood for, grab a blanket, and get comfortable.
The “Sweaters & City Strolls” Vibe

For when you want crisp city air, trendy coats, and the feeling of walking through a park with a hot coffee.
You’ve Got Mail (1998): The undisputed king of fall movies. Bookstores, dial-up internet, bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils, and Tom Hanks asking, “Don’t you love New York in the fall?”
Nookish Pairing: Pour yourself a classic hot apple cider and browse your local indie bookstore’s online shelves. If you need inspiration, grab a pick from The Ultimate Fall Reading List: Cozy, Magical, and Slightly Spooky.
When Harry Met Sally (1989): Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan walking through Central Park beneath the changing leaves is an iconic fall image. Between the cozy sweaters, crisp New York scenery, and slow-burn romance, it’s basically everything I want from a fall movie.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006): One of my all time favorites. It may span several seasons, but the montage of Andy Sachs walking through New York in boots and statement coats is peak fall-transition energy.
The Princess Diaries (2001): It isn’t technically a fall movie, but the plaid school uniforms, bleacher scenes, and foggy San Francisco weather make it mandatory September comfort viewing.
The “Rainy-Day Whodunit” Vibe

For when you want a mystery that's also cozy.
Knives Out (2019): A classic whodunit with peak New England fall vibes, a sprawling mansion, crackling fireplaces, and Chris Evans’s iconic cable-knit sweater.
Clue (1985): A brilliant, chaotic mansion mystery that may be filled with murder but never becomes grisly. It’s the ultimate dark-and-stormy-night movie, with a phenomenal cast, rapid-fire comedy, and three alternate endings. The DVD version gives you all three.
Nookish Pairing: Dust off your copy of the Clue board game for game night, or try a murder mystery jigsaw puzzle (the kind where the image on the box doesn't match the final puzzle) with a strong cup of Earl Grey tea. If a puzzle sounds too demanding tonight, swap it for one of these 17 Low-Energy Hobbies That Don't Feel Like Work.
The “Spooky but Sweet” Vibe

The “Spooky but Sweet” Vibe
Halloween aesthetics without horror. These comfort watches include friendly ghosts, silly witches, and classic monsters while keeping the actual scares low.
Casper (1995): Even though it’s about a haunted house, you won't find much nightmare fuel here. It’s sweet, funny, nostalgic, and much more interested in friendship than actually trying to scare you.
Hocus Pocus (1993): The perfect millennial Halloween comfort movie: witchy, silly, endlessly quotable, and made for a crisp October night. This one plays at least four times before Halloween every year.
Nookish Pairing: Bake a batch of those classic slice-and-bake Halloween sugar cookies (the ones with the little pumpkins or ghosts on them) and light a cedar- or pumpkin-scented candle.
The Little Vampire (2000): A nostalgic movie filled with gloomy hills, ancient castles, and a sweet friendship between a lonely boy and his vampire best friend.
Hotel Transylvania (2012): Fast-paced, colorful, and packed with classic monsters who are mostly concerned with running a successful resort and being good parents. Another absolute favorite.
Nookish Pairing: Boot up Moonlight Peaks. I wrote a whole breakdown on why I Can't Stop Playing Moonlight Peaks — Here's Who I Think Will Love It, and befriending local vampires perfectly matches the wholesome, monster-loving energy of this movie.
The Haunted Mansion (2003): Eddie Murphy gets trapped inside a sprawling Louisiana estate filled with secret passages, singing busts, and cobwebs in this funny family comedy.
Hubie Halloween (2020): Pure Adam Sandler silliness with chaotic, overly decorated, thermos-carrying Halloween energy in a small town.
The “Moody Magic & Escapism” Vibe

The “Moody Magic & Escapism” Vibe
Fairy tales, cloudy skies, comfort food, and adventures that make you want to curl up beneath a blanket.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001): The Halloween feast alone earns it a place on this list: floating pumpkins, roaring common-room fires, cozy robes, and the excitement of beginning a new school year at Hogwarts.
Nookish Pairing: Keep the Hogwarts mood going after the credits with the new full-cast Sorcerer’s Stone audiobook while you bake something warm.
Twilight (2008): The infamous blue-tinted filter, constant rain, and misty Pacific Northwest forests practically demand a cozy fall afternoon indoors.
Nookish Pairing: Find a blanket and pull your dog-eared paperback copy of Twilight off the shelf for a yearly fall reread. If you're overwhelmed by choices, try the chaotic method I used when My TBR Was Out of Control, So I Put It in a Bag.
Ratatouille (2007): Simmering soup, fresh crusty bread, rich vegetable stew, and chilly Paris streets make this an unexpectedly perfect rainy-night fall movie.
Inkheart (2008): Brendan Fraser plays a bookbinder who can bring characters out of their stories by reading aloud. This may be the most Reading Nook movie ever made. And definitely check out the book if you haven't read it yet—it's one of my all-time favorites.
Nookish Pairing: Knit a book sleeve in deep forest green, rust, or golden brown. It’s a perfect little project for protecting your next magical read.
Enchanted (2007): A funny fish-out-of-water fairy tale that moves from bright animation into crisp, real-world autumn in New York City.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971): Vintage comfort with an eccentric apprentice witch, an enchanted flying bed, and misty English countryside and coastline. My sister and I used to pretend our bed could fly when we were kids because of this movie.
Labyrinth (1986): David Bowie, Jim Henson puppets, and one deeply weird fantasy world make this perfect for a late-October night when you want strange without actually being scared.
The Goonies (1985): The cloudy Oregon coast gives this classic treasure hunt exactly the kind of gloomy, adventurous atmosphere I want in fall.
Into the Woods (2014): Meryl Streep, a foggy enchanted forest, familiar fairy tales gone slightly sideways, and enough darkness to feel fitting for fall without turning into horror.
