What to Do Tonight at Home: 27 Cozy Ideas for Every Energy Level

Not sure what to do tonight? Here are 27 fun things to do at home, whether you’re barely functioning, have a little energy, or are ready to actually do something.

OUTSIDE THE NOOKFEATURED

8/15/20269 min read

Sometimes I spend all day looking forward to having absolutely nothing to do.

Then I finally have absolutely nothing to do... and I have no idea what I want to do.

I could read. I could watch something. I could play a game. I could work on one of the hobbies I have collected over the years. I could leave the house. I could do something productive.

Instead, I spend 45 minutes trying to decide and end up scrolling on my phone.

So, rather than giving you one giant list of things to do tonight and creating an entirely new decision to make, I split these ideas up by how much energy you actually have left.

Because some nights I have three functioning brain cells and just want to lie down. Other nights, I suddenly decide the living room needs to be rearranged immediately.

Don't Even Want to Choose?

That's fair.

Find My Nook can do it for you. Choose your energy, time, and mood, and it'll give you a book, show, game, and hobby to choose from.

So, what kind of energy are we working with tonight?

Barely Functioning — minimal effort, please.

Some Brainpower — I can participate, but let’s not get carried away.

Fully Alive — I’m feeling ambitious tonight.

Barely Functioning

You want to do something, but your brain has already checked out.

1. Let Find My Nook Decide for You

Yes, I'm putting this first because sometimes even choosing something fun feels like too much effort.

Pick your energy, time, and mood and let Find My Nook narrow things down for you. No staring at Netflix for 30 minutes. No opening three different games just to close them again. Someone else can make the decision tonight.

Time: 5 minutes to get started
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

2. Read Something You Actually Want to Read

Not something you think you should read. Not the book you've been forcing yourself through for three weeks because you already made it to page 147.

Pick up your current book, grab something completely different, reread an old favorite, or just read one chapter.

If choosing the book is the problem, this is exactly why I created my Bag of Fate. I got tired of staring at my giant TBR and trying to figure out what I was actually in the mood to read.

The Bag of Fate: How I Choose My Next Read

Time: 15 minutes–all night
Cost: Free if you already have something to read
Company: Solo
Screen: Optional

3. Binge a TV Show

Keep watching whatever you’re into right now, go back to an old comfort show, or finally start the one everyone keeps telling you to watch.

Not every night has to be productive. Sometimes you just want to watch TV.

Time: 30 minutes–all night
Cost: Free if you already have a streaming service
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

4. Make an Unnecessarily Elaborate Sundae

You could put ice cream in a bowl.

Or dig through the kitchen and see what you can find - chocolate sauce, whipped cream, cookies, cereal, sprinkles, whatever sounds good. Load it up! The more ridiculous, the better.

Time: 10 minutes
Cost: Cheap
Company: Solo or together
Screen: No

5. Find a Playlist From a Specific Year or Era

Pick a year and find a playlist of the songs that were popular then.

Try the year you graduated, the year you met someone, a random year of your childhood, or a completely arbitrary year and see how many songs you forgot existed.

And then you’ll find a song you haven’t heard in forever and wonder how the heck you forgot about it.

Bonus points when you realize a song you still think of as “new” came out 15 years ago. 😭

Time: 20 minutes–all night
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Barely

6. Call Someone You Haven't Talked to in a While

Call your mom. Your sibling. Your grandparent. A friend you keep saying you need to catch up with.

You don't need exciting news or a reason to call. An aimless conversation while you're lying on the couch can be the plan.

Time: 20–60 minutes
Cost: Free
Company: Together, technically
Screen: No

7. Play a Mindless Game

I don’t mean a complicated RPG. We’re looking for a game you can play on autopilot.

Play solitaire. A phone game. A daily word game. Something you've played a hundred times before.

Basically, something you can play with about three brain cells left.

Time: 10–30 minutes
Cost: Usually free
Company: Solo
Screen: Yes

8. Go Down a Random Internet Rabbit Hole

Pick something random you’re curious about and see where it takes you.

Read about an unsolved mystery, look up a place you’ve always wondered about, investigate some random historical event or find out what happened to someone you haven't heard about in a while.

Time: 20–60 minutes
Cost: Free
Company: Solo
Screen: Yes

9. Take an Extra Nice Shower or Bath

Not rushed. Take your time and relax.

Put on music. Use fun products you wouldn’t normally use. Do a face or hair mask. Put on the good pajamas.

Basically, make yourself feel good.

Time: 20–60 minutes
Cost: Free–cheap
Company: Solo
Screen: No

Some Brainpower

There's a little life left in you.

10. Walk the Dog or Just Go for a Walk

No goal. No pace. No exercise.

Take the dog, put on a podcast or music, and wander around.

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house for a bit.

Time: 15–45 minutes
Cost: Free
Company: Solo, with someone or with the dog
Screen: No

11. Go Online Shopping Without Actually Buying Anything

This is window shopping for people who don't want to leave the house.

Browse clothes. Books. Home decor. Games. Things for a vacation you haven't booked.

Fill up your cart.

Admire your excellent taste.

Then, and this is important, close the tab.

Time: 20–60 minutes
Cost: Free if you obey the rules
Company: Solo
Screen: Yes

12. Do Something Nice for Yourself

Paint your nails. Pluck your eyebrows. Do your skincare. Put on a hair mask. Do your makeup just because.

Sometimes it's just nice to look in the mirror afterward and think, okay, cute.

Time: 15–60 minutes
Cost: Free if you use what you have
Company: Solo
Screen: No

13. Play a Video Game

Go back to whatever you’re playing right now, revisit an old favorite, or finally try one of the games that’s been sitting in your library.

It doesn't have to be cozy, either.

Play whatever sounds fun tonight. Maybe that’s something relaxing, maybe it’s something more intense. It doesn’t really matter as long as you’re enjoying it.

Time: 30 minutes–all night
Cost: Free if you already own the game
Company: Solo
Screen: Yes

14. Watch a Random Concert on YouTube

Search for a full concert from an artist you love, someone you've always wanted to see live, or even an artist you barely know.

Turn it up, grab a drink or snack, and watch it instead of putting music on in the background while you do other things.

Best seats in the house. No Ticketmaster fees.

Time: 45 minutes–2 hours
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

15. Go for a Drive Just Because

Pick a good playlist, get in the car, and take the long way through neighborhoods or back roads you don't normally drive.

Maybe stop somewhere for a coffee, soda, or little treat.

No errands allowed. The drive is the activity.

Time: 30–60 minutes
Cost: Gas + optional beverage acquisition
Company: Solo or together
Screen: No

16. Have a Proper Movie Night

There is a difference between putting a movie on and having a movie night.

Make popcorn. Gather snacks. Turn the lights down. Pick the movie beforehand so you don't spend 40 minutes browsing.

Time: 2–3 hours
Cost: Free–cheap
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

17. Have a First-Episode Night

Can’t decide what to watch? Pick two or three shows and watch the first episode of each.

Then just keep watching whichever one you liked best.

Time: 1–2 hours
Cost: Free if you already stream
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

18. Do a Puzzle or Brain Game

Pull out a jigsaw puzzle, do a crossword or Sudoku, play a word game, or find something that keeps your brain busy without making you work too hard.

And no, you don't have to finish the puzzle tonight.

This is exactly how hobbies start turning into another to-do list, and we've already discussed how I feel about that.

How to Enjoy Hobbies Without Turning Them Into Another To-Do List

Time: 15 minutes–all night
Cost: Free–cheap
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Optional

Fully Alive

Apparently I have energy tonight. Might as well use it.

19. Game With Friends or Play Couch Co-Op

Hop on Discord and play something with friends or grab someone at home for a couch co-op game.

Cooperative, competitive or completely chaotic. It doesn't matter.

Sometimes it's just more fun to play with other people.

Time: 30 minutes–all night
Cost: Free if you already have the game
Company: Together
Screen: Yes

20. Plan Your Next Vacation

It does not have to be a vacation you actually book.

Pick somewhere. Look at hotels. Find restaurants. See what there is to do. Build a complete itinerary.

One minute you're just browsing, and the next you've planned the whole trip.

Booking is optional.

Time: 30 minutes–until you have 37 tabs open
Cost: Free for now
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Yes

21. Bake Something or Have a Bake-Off

Find a recipe you've been wanting to try and make it.

Or, if someone else is home, turn it into a competition.

Pick the same recipe or ingredient and see whose turns out better.

Winner receives bragging rights.

Time: 1–2 hours
Cost: Cheap–moderate
Company: Solo or together
Screen: No

22. Get a Little Exercise

Lift weights. Stretch. Do yoga. Go for a run. Put on a dance workout. Try something completely different.

You’re just trying to do something that feels good and gets you moving.

Time: 15–60 minutes
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Optional

23. Reorganize a Room for Absolutely No Reason

You know the mood.

It's 8:14 PM and all of a sudden the couch has been in the wrong place for the past three years.

Move furniture. Swap decor between rooms. Redo a bookshelf. Change your little reading corner.

My husband and I recently switched our entire bedroom with the game room just because we felt like it, so when I say reorganize a room, I mean it.

There doesn’t have to be a point to it. Sometimes you just feel like changing things up.

Time: 30 minutes–potentially late
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: No

24. Get Ahead on Christmas Shopping

Or a birthday. Or another holiday. Christmas shopping is my favorite one to get ahead on because December always comes way faster than I expect.

Make your list, browse for ideas, or actually order a gift or two.

Time: 30–60 minutes
Cost: Free to plan; potentially expensive afterward
Company: Solo
Screen: Yes

25. Pick Up an Abandoned Hobby

You know the one.

The half-finished puzzle. The LEGO set. The cross-stitch. The painting. The instrument. The supplies you bought during a brief period when you were convinced this was about to become Your Thing.

Go visit it.

You don't have to finish anything, and you definitely don't have to commit to doing it consistently. Spend an hour with it because it sounds fun tonight.

That's basically the entire philosophy behind having hobbies without turning them into another obligation.

How to Enjoy Hobbies Without Turning Them Into Another To-Do List

Time: 20 minutes–all night
Cost: Free because you already bought everything
Company: Usually solo
Screen: Usually no

26. Try Learning Something Completely Random

Learn how to make an origami crane.

Try a card trick. Learn a dance. Practice pen spinning. Learn a few phrases in another language. Figure out how people do that whistle with their fingers.

The less useful it is, the better.

Time: 20–60 minutes
Cost: Free
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Probably

27. Do Something Completely Random

Recreate an old photo. Make a snack you loved as a kid. Build a blanket fort. Pick a theme and make your dinner, movie, or music match it. Walk around your house and photograph ordinary objects.

There doesn’t really need to be a point. Just pick something and go with it.

Time: However long it takes
Cost: Free–cheap
Company: Solo or together
Screen: Optional

Still Don't Know What to Do Tonight?

At this point, I have given you 27 options, which may have accidentally recreated the exact problem we were trying to solve.

So forget the list.

Let Find My Nook pick something and just go with it.

Some nights you’ll want to read for hours. Some nights you’ll randomly decide a room needs to be rearranged. Other nights you’ll make a ridiculous sundae and watch way too much TV.

Whatever sounds good tonight, do that.

So what are you doing tonight? 👀

Coming Next to the Nook 🍂

I’m starting to think about what I want to read this fall, so next week I’m putting together my fall TBR. Cozy, magical and slightly spooky. If you have a favorite fall read, let me know because I could use the recommendations!
